From the colonial charm of Gulangyu Island to the ancient maritime glories of Quanzhou, the cultural treasures of Fuzhou, and the mist-wrapped peaks of Wuyi Mountain — a 5-day coastal adventure.
Your English-speaking guide and driver will meet you at Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN) with a private vehicle. Transfer to the ferry terminal and take the short boat ride to Gulangyu Island (鼓浪屿), a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as "Piano Island" for its colonial-era piano museum and European architecture.
Spend the afternoon exploring the island's labyrinth of colonial villas, former consulates, and the famous Piano Museum. Climb Sunlight Rock (日光岩) for panoramic views over the island and Xiamen's skyline. Visit Shuzhuang Garden (菽庄花园), a beautiful seaside garden with a piano-shaped terrace. End the day watching the sunset from one of the island's scenic promenades.
Return to mainland Xiamen by ferry and visit Nanputuo Temple (南普陀寺), one of Fujian's most important Buddhist temples, nestled at the foot of a scenic mountain. Explore the ornate halls, ancient pagodas, and enjoy the peaceful temple gardens. Your guide will share the temple's history and Buddhist traditions.
Walk across the street to Xiamen University (厦门大学), one of China's most beautiful campuses. Stroll through the tree-lined avenues, past the iconic red buildings and芙蓉 lakes. In the afternoon, explore Zengcuo'an Village (曾厝垵), a charming fishing village turned arts and food hub with colorful alleyways, trendy cafes, and local snacks. End with a scenic drive along Huijian Island Road (环岛路), one of China's most beautiful coastal roads.
After breakfast, transfer to Xiamen North Railway Station for your high-speed train to Quanzhou (泉州) — a 45-minute journey. Quanzhou was once the world's largest port and the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. Your guide will meet you at the station.
Visit Kaiyuan Temple (开元寺), a 1,300-year-old Buddhist temple famous for its twin stone pagodas — the tallest ancient stone structures in Fujian. Then explore West Street (西街), the oldest commercial street in Quanzhou, lined with traditional shophouses and historic temples. Walk to the adjacent Qingjing Mosque (清净寺), one of the oldest mosques in China, built by Arab merchants in the Song Dynasty. End the day at the magnificent Luoyang Bridge (洛阳桥), an 1,000-year-old stone beam bridge spanning the Luo River — a masterpiece of ancient Chinese engineering.
After breakfast, take the high-speed train from Quanzhou to Fuzhou (福州), the capital of Fujian — approximately 1.5 hours. Arrive and transfer to your hotel in the city center.
Explore Sanfang Qixiang (三坊七巷), Fuzhou's most famous cultural district — three lanes and seven alleys of perfectly preserved Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture. This 1.7-kilometer area contains over 270 historic houses, former mansions of famous scholars and merchants, traditional teahouses, and local workshops. Visit the Lin Zexu Memorial Hall (林则徐纪念馆), dedicated to China's most famous reformist official who led the anti-opium campaign in the 19th century.
In the evening, stroll along Nanhou Street to taste authentic Fuzhou fish balls (鱼丸), one of the city's signature dishes, along with other local delicacies like lychee pork and Fuzhou-style braised pork belly.
After an early breakfast, depart Fuzhou for Wuyishan (武夷山) — approximately 3 hours by private vehicle. Wuyishan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its dramatic Danxia landscape and world-famous Dahongpao tea (Big Red Robe tea), one of China's most prized oolong teas.
Experience the legendary Bamboo Raft Ride on the Nine-Bend River (九曲溪竹筏漂流) — a 2-hour journey drifting past towering peaks, ancient cliff inscriptions, and lush vegetation. Your guide will narrate the legends and history as you glide through the breathtaking scenery. Visit the Wuyi Palace (武夷宫), the oldest Taoist temple in Fujian, and explore the Dahongpao Tea Plantation to learn about tea cultivation, picking, and the art of oolong tea making, with a tasting session of the prized Dahongpao.
After the tour, your guide and driver will transfer you to the nearest airport (Wuyishan Airport, Wuyishan North Railway Station, or continue to your next destination).
Spring (Apr–Jun) offers pleasant weather and lush scenery. Autumn (Sep–Nov) is ideal for tea harvesting season, especially for Dahongpao tea in Wuyishan. Summer can be hot and humid along the coast.
Light, breathable clothing for coastal Xiamen and Quanzhou, layers for cooler Wuyishan mornings, comfortable walking shoes for temple and old town walks, sun protection, and a light jacket for air-conditioned trains.
High-speed rail connects Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Fuzhou quickly and comfortably. Private vehicle is arranged for inter-city transfers and Wuyishan day trip. Gulangyu Island is car-free — explored on foot or by electric cart.
Book Gulangyu ferry tickets in advance during peak season. Wuyishan bamboo rafts operate weather-permitting — your guide will arrange alternatives if needed. Don't miss the local cuisine: Xiamen seafood, Quanzhou peanut soup, Fuzhou fish balls, and Wuyi Dahongpao tea.
